Wild in Scotland are offering a superb new tour to Islay, an enchanting island that takes your breath away! Meandering through mountains and glens, along lochs and coastlines, it's an amazing tour that will take you off the beaten track once more!

The Highlights!
  • Hear the legends of Willam Wallace and Robert the Bruce.
  • Meet Hamish the hairy coo!
  • Visit Islay with it's distilleries, amazing celtic history and beautiful landscapes.
  • Enjoy a night in the lively town of Oban!
  • Plus Loch Lomond, Kilmartin Glen and loads loads more!

The kitty includes:
  • All hostel accommodation, evening meals and breakfasts.
  • Return ferries to and from Islay.
  • Entrance to Lagavuillin Distillery for a wee dram!

Day 1: We depart Edinburgh at 8.30am and make our way towards Stirling to hear the saga's of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce before saying good morning to Hamish, the hairy coo! We meander our way through the Trossachs to Balquhidder for a lovely forest walk in the foot steps of Rob Roy MacGregor. After lunch we'll explore Kilchurn Castle and St Conan's Kirk with it's quirky carvings (!) before arriving in the lively fishing town of Oban for our first night. There are great views towards the Isles of Kerrera and Mull as well as pubs a plenty for when the sun has gone down.

Day 2: This morning we make our way following the Atlantic coastline to Kilmartin Glen, an area that is literally littered in historical sites! From the neolithic standing stones and burial cairns to Dunadd fort, the ancient capital of the Gaels, Kilmartin Glen showcases several thousand years of Scottish history! Taking the lunchtime ferry from Kennacraig to Islay there are breathtaking views towards Gigha, Jura and the west coast of Scotland. Keep an eye open for marine mammals swimming in the waters too! Once on Islay, we'll visit Finlaggan. It was the centre for the Lords of the Isles from which they ruled the west coast islands of Scotland as well as some of the mainland under Clan MacDonald. You'll soon discover that Islay has it's own time ... it seems to slow down when you reach the island ... perhaps it's got something to do with all that whisky they make?!

For the next two nights we stay in the picturesque Port Charlotte. Our hostel was once a distillery storehouse and now offers amazing views over Loch Indaal towards Bowmore.

Day 3: It's a full day exploring and relaxing in Islay! We'll visit Kildalton Cross, an 8th Century celtic carved cross that is one of the best examples remaining in Scotland! There are miles of superb white beaches to be enjoyed whether for a walk, picnic or perhaps a game of football! Discover the Mull of Oa where the cliffs rise above the mighty Atlantic and enjoy a superb walk to the American Memorial, erected in memory of two troop ships which were lost in 1918 between Islay and Northern Ireland. We'll sample some whisky at Lagavuillin Distillery - it is what Islay is most famous for after all! And if that's given you a taste for the other distilleries, there is a great local pub where you can wet your lips trying them out this evening!

Day 4: This morning we catch the ferry back to the mainland at Kenncraig on the Mull of Kintyre before winding our way along Loch Fyne to Inveraray for lunch. It's then over Rest and Be Thankful, a high mountain pass, to the shores of Loch Lomond. And last but definitely not least, we'll stop by Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary Queens of Scots before arriving in Edinburgh once more!

We're certain that this will be a really special trip, and one you'll remember for a long time to come. We look forward to seeing you.

Tour itineraries and accommodation can vary due to acts of God etc, but we normally stick to this. Ferries are, very obviously (!), subject to weather conditions. Wild in Scotland Ltd cannot be held responsible for any sailing cancellations. However they will provide a brilliant alternative tour as cancellations tend to be last minute! Kitty includes hostels, evening meals, breakfasts and distillery.
