stromeferry guesthouse
After hunting high and low for almost a decade we found the perfect spot to call our highland home. Stromeferry is a peaceful fishing village at the southern end of Loch Carron, a sea Loch just east of the bridge to the Isle of Skye. The view of the Loch (lake) with the mountains behind is mind-blowing.
The house itself is the old Stationmaster's House. The railway was built from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh (a few stops down) in the 1880's by the Victorian's, most notable by the drug Lord Matheson. He made his money selling opium. Not something we approve of but it did give us a railway and a lovely stone house by the sea.THINGS TO DO IN STROMEFERRY: There is a great walk in the woods with the amazing views of the Loch and mountains and a nice walk along the pebble beach during low tide. On the tours that are longer than 3 days you can go on a boat trip with a local fisherman to see wildlife and get a taste of scallops!
In the house there is a pool table, music system, loads of board games, cards etc. There is also a small TV & DVD for the 3rd night on the 4 day Skye Escape to watch Highlander or another Scottish classic.
ACCOMODATION
Stationmaster's House is always private to Wild in Scotland tours.
MAXIMUM 6 PER DORM ROOM! There are 3 dorms of 6 and some double / twin rooms available for £10 per peson per night.
SAME SEX / MIXED Normally we have ladies only rooms and a couple of mixed dorms. If you would prefer a same sex dorm let us know. Also if you have booked on separately to your friends and would like to share a room let us know on the booking form and we will do our best.
SHOWERS We have renovated and decorated the house top to toe in the last couple of years and have great powerful hot showers for you. There is one shower for every 4 people so you dont have to get up at a crazy time in the morning to get a hot shower!
HEATING We have a wood pellet stove called HAL. HAL heats up the whole house nice an toasty using carbon neutral pellets made from waste sawdust. HAL works really well most of the time but occassionally he gets in a mood. We make allowances due to using this new technology and think it is great that he does not ask for fossil fuels to heat up the house.
COSTS Stationmaster's charges £15 per night for a dorm bed and £25 for a bed in a twin / double plus £7.50 per night for 2 courses. Bargain! Included in the Kitty.
At most places we stay we buy food in the shops and take it along to cook ourselves. At Stationmaster's we are really lucky and Hilary does the cooking for us and we just do the washing up! All food is homemade and made from scratch with fresh ingredients, using local seasonal produce where possible.
Usually there is a main course like this followed by something sweet:
- Salmon filet (locally and sustainably farmed in our clean waters) with mashed potatoes and cauliflour & broccoli chese
- Chicken Balmoral, stuffed with Haggis or Vegetarian Haggis
- Venison (really high quality healthy wild venison, very like beef, and better for the environment than any other meet) sausage casserole with new potatoes
- Vegetarian Lasagne
- stuffed peppers with local cheese ( there is a dairy in the village that makes award winning cheeses)
- Vegetarian Chilli
Vegetarian and allergies
We always have a vegetarian option, something like vegetarian chilli, . Please let us know your allergies on the booking form. For regular choices you will be asked on the morning of departure.
